In 2007, the Noguchi Museum held a T-shirt Design Competition to create a new graphic T-shirt. As a way to engage a group of young designers, the Museum opened the contest to local area college design school students. The challenge was to create a design that was inspired by Isamu Noguchi, his work and the Noguchi Museum itself. The contest was judged by the professional staff of the Museum.
The Museum received over 100 design entries from participating schools. Parsons, The New School for Design and Pratt Institute participated heavily with many interesting and innovative designs. The Museum would like to thank the professors from Parsons and Pratt for their enthusiastic participation.
The winning student design was awarded a $500.00 Gift Certificate as well as the opportunity to work directly in a collaborative client-like relationship with the Museum. The winning design is now also a finished product available for sale to Museum and online-line visitors.
Jon Lopkin, a graduate student at the Parsons School of Design, created the winning design that incorporated key elements such as directional way finding on the back and references to the Museum garden and Noguchi’s sculpture on the front of the T-shirt. In Jon’s words: “…the t-shirt captures the feeling that one experiences upon visiting the Noguchi Museum…First, you are struck by Noguchi’s bold and powerful sculpture and as you advance…a peaceful garden.”
The Noguchi Museum would like to acknowledge and thank Jon Lopkin for his creativity, hard work, and professionalism in carrying out this project.
